Anatomy of a full teardown

142 components, 9 trays, 31 working days: what actually happens between 'commission accepted' and 'ready for collection'.

Anatomy of a full teardown

Every rebuild begins with a map. Under the glass, the donor calibre is photographed at each stage of disassembly — from mainspring to balance wheel — so that all 142 components return to exactly where they belonged.

Then the parts that will be replaced are replaced, and the parts that remain are refinished by hand. The movement is rebuilt, regulated in six positions, and trialled for fourteen days on the winder before it earns its engraved caseback.
